Apple iPad Mini review

Apple iPad Mini review The iPad created the modern tablet market, so had a huge head start. Early Android-powered tablets just couldn’t compete with the already-established iOSApp store or Apple’s extensive iTunes content library. However, Google has now caught up, with a whole host of 7in devices running newer versions of Android providing fantastic value for money and eating into iPad sales. Apple hasn’t taken this lying down, so has fought back with the iPad Mini. With its 7.9in screen it breaks from the 7in tablet norm and is Apple’s cheapest iPad yet, but it will need to impress to outperform the Nexus 7 and Amazon’s Kindle Fire HD.
The Mini is made from the same high-quality materials as its bigger brother and is available in the same colours, storage capacities and with the option of Wi-Fi or 4G, and is every bit the premium product you would expect from Apple. It’s 7mm thick and weighs just 308g – around 30g lighter than the Nexus 7, or half the weight of a regular iPad. This is mainly thanks to the lightweight aluminium rear panel and glass front, which looks gorgeous in both black and white.
iPad Mini
Despite the iPad's slim profile, Apple has still made room for the usual selection of buttons and ports. The mute switch and volume buttons are found on the upper right side, just as they are on the full-size iPad, except Apple has opted for separate buttons for increasing and decreasing volume rather than use the old rocker switch design. The power button is at the top of the tablet, along with a small slit for the microphone and a 3.5mm headphone port. Stereo speaker grilles and Apple’s new Lightning port are situated at the bottom and the left side is kept bare, reserved to attach one of Apple’s magnetised Smart Covers. The lens for the 5-megapixel camera is the only item of note on the rear and there's the standard single button on the front, as on every iOS device.
iPad Mini
It’s not just the tablet itself that’s thin – the screen bezel is less than 7mm wide. It’s almost impossible to hold the tablet without one of your fingers touching the screen, so Apple has developed “resting thumb recognition” to avoid any accidents. The system worked well when we were reading eBooks on the move, letting us turn the page with one thumb while the tablet ignored the other.
iPad Mini
The screen itself is a major departure for the tablet market. To avoid any problems with existing apps, the iPad Mini has a 4:3, 7.9in display with the same 1,024x768 resolution as the iPad 2. It has roughly 35% more screen surface area than a 7in Android tablet, but there are significantly fewer pixels filling that space. The 1,280x800 Google Nexus 7 has a pixel density of 216ppi – a lot higher than the 163ppi of the iPad Mini's screen.
In side-by-side comparisons with higher-resolution tablets like the Nexus, the iPad Mini loses out on sharpness, but in practice we preferred the extra screen space on the iPad for web browsing. The browser tabs take up a lot more room in landscape view on the Nexus, meaning you get almost 60% more viewable space on the iPad. You can’t spot any signs of pixilation unless you look very closely and most websites were designed with 768 horizontal pixels in mind, so you rarely have to scroll left or right.
However, the 16:9 Nexus 7 is far better suited to video playback than the iPad, as the Mini's 4:3 ratio gives films huge black bars on either side. On the plus side, the iPad Mini's IPS panel reproduces colours accurately and has fantastic viewing angles, even if the glossy display is incredibly reflective.

Motorola RAZR i

A gorgeous slimline Intel phone
Motorola RAZRi
Our Expert Opinion The RAZR i has an Intel rather than ARM processor, and it's seriously quick - around the same speed as the iPhone 5 in the Sunspider JavaScript benchmark. It runs Android 4.0 incredibly smoothly, and the operating system looks great on the phone's 960x540-pixel Super AMOLED screen.
The RAZR i has a 4.3in screen, which is big considering how compact the phone is. It's also incredibly slim, and the rubberised back looks great and makes the phone comfortable to hold.
It's a classy handset all round, and is also remarkably good value on contract.

Apple iPhone 5

A worthy update to the iPhone
Apple iPhone 5
Our Expert Opinion Five generations on, and the iPhone is still the model to beat. Android has taken great strides, but iOS is still the slickest, fastest and easiest to use operating system, and there's no arguing with the quality of the apps in the Apple App Store.
The iPhone 5 is an evolution of the 4, with a longer screen for more room for app icons and an aspect ratio better suited to widescreen films. It's also incredibly quick - more than twice as fast as the iPhone 4S in the Sunspider JavaScript benchmark.
The only thing stopping the iPhone 5 from getting an award is Apple's horrendous new Maps app, which replaces Google Maps, but this should improve with time.

Samsung Galaxy S3

The best Android smartphone just got better
Samsung Galaxy S3 LTE
Our Expert Opinion The Samsung Galaxy S3 is still the best Android smartphone there is. It's slim, fast, has a beautiful AMOLED screen and runs the bang-up-to-date Android 4.1 Jelly Bean operating system.
The phone has just got better, too, thanks to an upgrade to support 4G. On Everything Everywhere's network we saw speeds up to 25Mbit/s, which is twice as quick as many home broadband connections.
Samsung has also loaded the phone with clever features. If you bring the phone to your ear while a contact is on screen it will call that person automatically, if you flip the phone over while it's ringing it will turn the ringer off, and the Smart Stay feature uses the front camera to keep the screen on while you're looking at it.
Throw in an excellent camera and you've got all the ingredients for the perfect smartphone.

The BlackBerry as Black Sheep

The BlackBerry as Black Sheep

Rachel Crosby speaks about her BlackBerry phone the way someone might speak of an embarrassing relative.
Multimedia
J. Emilio Flores for The New York Times
“I want to take a bat to it,” Rachel Crosby, of Los Angeles, says of her creaky BlackBerry. “You can’t do anything with it.”
“I’m ashamed of it,” said Ms. Crosby, a Los Angeles sales representative who said she had stopped pulling out her BlackBerry at cocktail parties and conferences. In meetings, she says she hides her BlackBerry beneath her iPadfor fear clients will see it and judge her.
The BlackBerry was once proudly carried by the high-powered and the elite, but those who still hold one today say the device has become a magnet for mockery and derision from those with iPhones and the latest Android phones. Research in Motion may still be successful selling BlackBerrys in countries like India and Indonesia, but in the United States the company is clinging to less than 5 percent of the smartphone market — down from a dominating 50 percent just three years ago. The company’s future all depends on a much-delayed new phone coming next year; meanwhile RIM recorded a net loss of $753 million in the first half of the year compared with a profit of more than $1 billion a year earlier.
Among the latest signs of the loss of cachet: One of the first steps Marissa Mayer took as Yahoo’s newly appointed chief executive to remake the company’s stodgy image was to trade in employees’ BlackBerrys for iPhones and Androids. BlackBerrys may still linger in Washington, Wall Street and the legal profession, but in Silicon Valley they are as rare as a necktie.
As the list shrinks of friends who once regularly communicated using BlackBerry’s private messaging service, called BBM, many a BlackBerry owner will not mince words about how they feel about their phone.
“I want to take a bat to it,” Ms. Crosby said, after waiting for her phone’s browser to load for the third minute, only to watch the battery die. “You can’t do anything with it. You’re supposed to, but it’s all a big lie.”
The cultural divide between BlackBerry loyalists and everyone else has only grown more extreme over the last year as companies that previously issued employees BlackBerrys — and only BlackBerrys — have started surrendering to employee demands for iPhones and Android-powered smartphones.
Goldman Sachs recently gave its employees the option to use an iPhone. Covington & Burling, a major law firm, did the same at the urging of associates. Even the White House, which used the BlackBerry for security reasons, recently started supporting the iPhone. (Some staff members suspect that decision was influenced by President Obama, who now prefers his iPad for national security briefings. A spokesman for the White House declined to comment.)
Out in the world, the insults continue. Victoria Gossage, a 28-year-old hedge fund marketer, said she recently attended a work retreat at Piping Rock Club, an upscale country club in Locust Valley, N.Y., and asked the concierge for a phone charger. “First he said, ‘Sure.’ Then he saw my phone and — in this disgusted tone — said, ‘Oh no, no, not for that.’ ”
“You get used to that kind of rejection,” she said.
“BlackBerry users are like Myspace users,” sneers Craig Robert Smith, a Los Angeles musician. “They probably still chat on AOL Instant Messenger.”
BlackBerry outcasts say that, increasingly, they suffer from shame and public humiliation as they watch their counterparts mingle on social networking apps that are not available to them, take higher-resolution photos, and effortlessly navigate streets — and the Internet — with better GPS and faster browsing. More indignity comes in having to outsource tasks like getting directions, booking travel, making restaurant reservations and looking up sports scores to their exasperated iPhone and Android-carting partners, friends and colleagues.
“I feel absolutely helpless,” said Ms. Gossage. “You’re constantly watching people do all these things on their phones and all I have going for me is my family’s group BBM chats.”
Ryan Hutto, a director at a San Francisco health information company, said he frequently depended on others, often his wife, for music playlists, navigation and sports scores. “After two or three questions, people start to get irritated,” Mr. Hutto said.
His wife, Shannon Hutto, says with a sigh: “Anytime we go anywhere, I always have to pull up the map. If we’re searching for a restaurant, I pull up the Yelp app. If we need a reservation, I pull up OpenTable. I kind of feel like his personal assistant.”
Still, a few BlackBerry users say they’re sticking with the device, mainly because of the BlackBerry’s efficient, physical keyboard. “I use my BlackBerry by choice,” said Lance Fenton, a 32-year-old investor who frequently travels and needs to send e-mails from the road. “I can’t type e-mails on touch-screen phones.”
Mr. Fenton said he could not wrap his head around iPhone fever. “I constantly ask people, ‘What is so great about it?’ and they have these nonsensical answers,” he said. “Someone told me I’m missing out on some app that maps their ski runs. I ski four days a year. On the road, I don’t need a ski app.”
RIM’s most recent efforts to hold on to loyal customers, as well as software developers building apps for its next generation of phones scheduled to be available next year, have elicited universal cringes. In a recent promotional video, Alec Saunders, RIM’s vice president for developer relations, is shown belting out a rock song titled “Devs, BlackBerry Is Going to Keep on Loving You,” a riff on the 1981 power ballad by REO Speedwagon “Keep on Loving You.”
“This is the sign of a desperate company,” said Nick Mindel, a 26-year-old investment analyst. “Come on, BlackBerry, I always had some faith, but you just lost a customer. Frankly, I don’t think they can afford to lose many more.”
After eight years with a BlackBerry, Mr. Mindel said he just joined the wait list for the iPhone 5. When it arrives, he said, "I’m considering removing my BlackBerry battery, pouring in cement, and using the BlackBerry as an actual paperweight.”
