"For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life." -- John 3:16
Being a preacher, it's not often that I get to sit in the pew and listen to another preacher, especially on a Sunday morning.
Once while I was on vacation, I had one of those rare moments. I heard a colleague and friend preach a sermon on John 3:16. The title of his sermon was: "Take a Mulligan." At the time I had no idea what a mulligan was. It could have been something to eat for all I knew, or even some theological term that I just hadn't heard before. However, I learned that a "mulligan" is a golfing term.
For those of you who are as clueless as I was about a mulligan, you should probably read this paragraph and not jump ahead for the essence of time. And, those of you who know more about golf than I do can probably save some time here and just skip the rest of this paragraph. My golfer-preacher-friend explained that a mulligan was an unofficial do-over shot offered when one's first shot at the ball off the tee was less than stellar. Most importantly, this do-over shot doesn't count against your score. You won't find mulligan shots being offered in a serious or professional game of golf but only in a casual game of golf with one's friends and golfing buddies.
A mulligan -- what a wonderful metaphor for what God has done for us through his son, Jesus Christ and his death and resurrection.
John 3:16 tells us clearly what God has done for us, and that is God gave up his only son to death on the cross that we could have a do-over shot at our relationship with him. It's one that doesn't count against us but instead for us. This is God's gift to each and every one of us -- freely given. It's free, though certainly not cheap. God paid a very high price so that we could have this do-over shot at eternal life with him. It cost him the life of his only son, Jesus Christ.
This is grace, not that we deserve it, but because he cares about us enough to give us another shot. We call it resurrection -- eternal life -- and God offers it to all of us, no matter who we are. This is true love.
On Easter Sunday, we Christians will once again celebrate God's amazing gift of love and a new and fulfilling life in Christ in a big way. We will celebrate God's gift to us of a life of hope and promise, eternal life -- resurrection!
Easter Sunday celebration will come and go, but the risen Christ remains with us as God's reminder that Easter does not end when the trumpet blasts quiet and the marshmallow peeps dry up. The gift keeps on giving. We are offered by our best friend ever a chance to start over, a mulligan, again and again as we strive to get right with him. He offers this do-over shot at life with him not just on Easter Sunday, but every day.
This is amazing news. Your best friend is offering you a mulligan right now simply because he loves you. So, take it with gratitude; it will change your life forever.
